Open Public Meetings Act

For forty years, New Jersey has had "The Sunshine Law", which requires public bodies to announce when they will meet, and to allow the public to attend, except when certain privileged subjects are discussed.  We sometimes hear, or read, that meetings have been held by public bodies in violation of The Sunshine Law.  We might even read about an event and wonder whether it violates the law.

We therefore provide our Members with the attached two-page summary of the law, which is put out by the Society of Professional Journalists, which obviously has a particular interest in getting information.  We think that the summary is adequate for general knowledge.  If you ever need to know more, there are email addresses to contact for more information.  Additionally, as the article states, the Open Public Meetings Act begins at N.J.S.A. 10:4-6, which is a citation to the New Jersey Statutes.  The Statutes can be found, in numerical order, on the New Jersey State website.
